Spotlight - Young Galaxy

Young Galaxy are a band that really portrays their band name through their songs featuring a kaleidoscope of lush atmospheric indie dream pop sounds. Both Catherine McCandles and Stephen Ramsey deliver vocals that work well together, providing a sound landscape that is dreamy but at the same time delivers a sense of urgency as it reflects on the present state of the world. Young Galaxy released their self titled debut on the Arts & Crafts label in 2007, an album that has a somewhat dark and cold mood dealing with issues of loneliness, religion, politics, love, heartache, and growing up. It was a very solid debut album full of depth and enjoyable from beginning to end.

In 2009 they went with a more do-it-yourself plan, independently releasing their sophomore album Invisible Republic. The album has received critical acclaim making many bloggers top 10 lists in 2009. Additionally it was on the long list for the 2010 Polaris Prize. The follow up album features more experimentation and a different direction than the debut. The first song Long Live the Fallen World starts off as a synth heavy song breaking down to hyper-speed electronic sounds for the final minute.

The album will be get a U.S. release on July 27th on Paperbag Records. They released an EP in June featuring some left over songs and remixes from the Invisible Republic sessions which is available on iTunes. They will be opening up for Arcade fire in Boston in August, and will be supporting Stars on their upcoming Canadian shows. The band is also working on their 3rd album and planning on releasing it at some point this year.
